(MILLVILLE, NJ) ― It’s not a secret that Americans love their pets. A recent study revealed that more than 90 percent of new dog owners adopted pooches for companionship. As a result, dogs and cats are being treated as members of the family.

Responsible pet parents want to keep pets happy and safe. The experts at The Espoma Company, pioneer in natural gardening solutions since 1929, launched the new Safe Paws initiative to help keep pets safe outdoors. They know protecting pets outside is just as important as inside and ensure yards and gardens are safe for the beloved four-legged member of the family.

“The more pet parents know about how to keep their pets safe,” says Jeremy Brunner, vice president of Espoma, “the more likely pets will stay out of harm’s way.”

Safe Paws equips responsible pet owners with tips and tricks to avoid the dangers of common lawn hazards.

“The yard is one big adventure, filled with sights, sounds, smells and tastes,” Brunner explains. “The first step to a safe yard is to look around and evaluate how to make it safer for your best friend.”

Brunner recommends switching to organic, pet-safe lawn foods, like the Espoma Organic annual feeding program, to grow lush, green grass. Organic lawn food keeps paws safe from harmful lawn chemicals that can easily be ingested or tracked into homes.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates some 90 million pounds of pesticides are applied to lawns each year. Lawn chemicals are potentially harmful to animals that run and play in yards, neighborhoods and parks, and may be a contributing factor in the increase of cancer in pets. According to the National Canine Cancer Foundation, an alarming one out of every three dogs is diagnosed with cancer.

“We believe, like eating nutritious food, the safest practice is to use organic lawn products and limit the use of potentially harmful garden chemicals,” says Brunner.

With the new downloadable Safe Paws Guide, Espoma offers simple ways to keep four-legged friends healthy and safe outside so they can live longer lives. Download the guide for tips to create an organic lawn, a checklist to keep pets healthy outdoors and to learn the benefits of an organic lawn.
